At the age of 106, Apo Maria “Whang-Od” Oggay, an Indigenous Filipina tattoo artist, has broken a record by becoming the oldest person ever to grace the cover of a Vogue magazine. The announcement was made on Thursday via an Instagram post that highlighted Whang-Od’s contribution to the Filipino spirit. The stunning photo, captured by photographer Artu Nepomuceno, shows Whang-Od posing with her hand under her chin, reminiscent of Rodin’s The Thinker. In another post, Vogue Philippines elaborated on Whang-Od’s work as a mambabatok, or traditional tattoo artist, who has revived the practice of stick and thorn tattooing. Prior to Whang-Od, the oldest person to feature on a Vogue cover was Judi Dench, who appeared on the front of British Vogue at 85 years old in May 2020.
