Good Tuesday morning, December 2nd. We've got flurries ending late this afternoon, some sunshine and a high of 0. The dollar trading 71.38 cents U.S. I'm Stacey Englehart. Well, it's Giving Tuesday today, a global movement that encourages people to give back to their communities, whether through donating, volunteering, or from acts of kindness. And food banks across the province hoping today will translate into extra donations. According to a new report released yesterday by Food Banks Ontario, we're relying more and more to survive on food banks and demand is outpacing supply. According to stats, food bank use reached the highest number on record, 8.7 million visits between April 2024 and March 2025, a 165% increase since 2019. CEO Carolyn Stewart called it an affordability crisis, pushing more families from just getting by to barely holding on. Well, the Bruce County Beef Farmers and Grey County Beef Farmers Association have just donated almost $4,000 to Grey Bruce Food Share this holiday season. Located in Owen Sound, the collaborative food distribution hub redistributes surplus food to more than 25 local food banks and charities throughout Bruce and Grey counties. just in time for the holidays, another company has announced massive layoffs. Algoma Steel, apparently laying off more than 1/3 of its workforce as it accelerates a transition to new equipment in response to U.S. tariffs. The company is expecting to lay off over 1,000 workers. Police in Ontario have safety tips for Canadians buying or selling items online through marketplaces this holiday season. They say it's best to meet during daylight hours, avoid inviting strangers to your home, and bring a friend along. According to Ottawa Police, personal robberies up more than 20% over the same time last year. Light 99-3 Sports, NHL last night. Winnipeg lost to Buffalo, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, San Jose, all winners. Leafs are in Florida tonight, 7.30. In the NFL yesterday, New England beat the Giants 33-15. At the FIBA World Cup Qualifier in Toronto, Canada beat the Bahamas 94-88 after beating them on Friday in the opener. And in the NBA tonight, the Raptors back to work. They host Portland at 7.30.
