It's Wednesday, March 18th. Good morning. A few flurries, otherwise cloudy, windy and cool this afternoon with a wind chill close to minus 8. The dollar hovering just over 73 cents. I'm Stacey Englehart. Well, the federal government's going to spend more taxpayer money to appeal a Supreme Court lower decision that found the use of the Emergencies Act 4 years ago was unconstitutional. The government invoked the act to stop protests at key border points and at the nation's capital in 2022. While in 24, a federal court ruling rejected the use of the act, found it breached our charter rights. A January ruling affirmed that decision, but the feds say they're going to appeal it anyway. Provincial police charged 19 drivers in less than two hours for driving on a closed highway in northern Ontario. OPP said multiple Rd. closures were in effect during Monday's severe winter storm. Police said driving on a closed highway puts motorists and 1st responders at risk. solo drivers in Ontario may soon be able to use the high occupancy vehicle lane during off-peak hours. The transport minister is proposing amendments saying the change modeling shows it would reduce travel times and ease gridlock. The government has not decided what would count as off-peak hours. Ontario is expanding tailgating rules beyond sporting events to allow people to bring their own alcohol to community outdoor events. Starting this spring, organizers say farmers markets, art exhibits, movie screenings, neighborhood festivals can apply for a BYOB permit. Attendees would then be able to bring their own alcohol in designated areas. And as gas prices continue to fluctuate and the price of oil now hovering around $93 a barrel due to the U.S. and Israel's war with Iran, Fighting within the U.S. government resulted in a major player stepping down. The director of National Counter-Terrorism claimed Iran posed no immediate threat and the U.S. only went to war because of pressure from Israel. Light 99, 3 Sports, Leafs lost to the Islanders 3-1. Elsewhere, Montreal edged Boston in OT, Edmonton beat San Jose, Vancouver beat Florida. Winnipeg lost to Nashville in a shootout. Leafs host the Hurricanes Friday at 7. PWHL, Toronto blank Boston, 2-0 in the OHL tonight. Owen Sound hosts Flint. Barry is in Kingston. At the World Baseball Classic, Venezuela won for the first time, beating the United States 3-2.
